Dye with the Slime by Piero D'Angelo

The workshop is meant to engage the user with fashion from an innovative perspective where science, technology, and bio-design are combined together. The samples dyed with Physarum Polycephalum points to a more mindful approach to design which cares towards self, community, and nature. A process that won't promote the environment degradation but instead provides a more sustainable option in textile and fashion.

The Workshop

Through this workshop, I would like to provide an alternative approach to fashion where users are able to experiment with living systems like Physarum Polycephalum and dye fabrics including silk and cotton with it. Physarum Polycephalum is a genus of Slime Mould, a unicellular organisms that feeds on bacteria, yeast, and fungi.

The Pigments

The pigments naturally prodced by Physarum Polycephalum are of a vivid yellow color and will be used during the workshop to dye small textile swatches. t is also possible to turn this living organism's pigments into orange, red, golden, and green just by changing their pH. This technique could potentially allow the users to produce samples dyed with a broader colour palette and shades.

The Workshop Step-by-Step

  • Introduction about the workshop and Physarum Polycephalum
  • Demonstrate how to create a petri dish with nutrients where to grow Physarum Polycephalum
  • Show how Physarum Polycephalum grows
  • Scrape part of Physarum Polycephalum into a plate, add water, place the textile sample on it
  • Show how almost immediately Physarum Polycephalum's pigments can dye the sample
  • Scrape the left over Physarum Polycephalum into a second plate and add vinegar
  • Physarum Polycephalum will slowly turn into a golden/orange color
  • Show the video on how to bio-print with Physarum Polycephalum
  • Show the BIOSCENT kit video and explain the concept

Materials Needed

  • Deep pan x1
  • Glass cup x1
  • Whisk
  • Teaspoon
  • Water measuring jug
  • Hot plate
  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Agar
  • Grated porridge
  • 1 empty Petri dish for demonstration
  • Petri dishes with Physarum Polycephalum (x1 each participant)
  • Empty small plates (x2 each participant)
  • Silk and cotton swatches (x2 each participant)
  • Pipette (x1 each participant)
  • Tweezers (x1 each participant)
  • Scraper (x1 each participant)
  • TV
