SledgeReport: A polar expedition to understand the remote microbial world

Here, we present SledgeReport, a mobile solar powered DNA sequencing lab packed down into the back of a sledge. In April 2019 this sledge-lab was pulled across Europe’s largest ice cap by ski in search of the wildest microbes from the wildest places. Our world is teeming with microbes. Our understanding of these microbes shapes the way we interact with them and how they interact with us. Despite their increasingly understood role in our rapidly changing climate, microbes in the most remote polar corners on this earth remain almost entirely unknown to us. What if we could study these microbes exactly where they live and thrive.
SledgeReport is an exploration collective aiming to better understand the Earth’s remote microbiome. Inspired by research projects studying microbes from remote locations, Glen Gowers, Oliver Vince, and John-Henry Charles established SledgeReport to spearhead a movement towards solar powered DNA sequencing that can be conducted by anyone, anywhere.
